Bad Days....

Have you ever had one of those weeks where something/everything goes wrong and it just sets the tone for the rest of that week?  I'm having one of those weeks right now.

Generally when this happens, I like to be by myself to just be by myself.  I'm not one of those ppl who feels like they have to around ppl all the time.  For some ppl, being by yourself is some sort of new concept and it's truly extraordinary to watch them make sense of this idea.

I think the most important thing to remember when you're having a bad day/week is that it's just a day/week out of your life.  In the whole scheme of things, will it matter in the future that this has happened?  Life is so short, that it's better to move on and let it go.  For some (like me) it's harder to let go of things that you feel is unfair or shouldn't have happened, but this is life, and life brings good and bad situations.

Chin up, drown yourself in music, and keep on living life.    

Would you want YOUR genome sequenced?

I was sitting in my Microbiology class today pondering about whether I would want my entire genome sequenced.  This class is about Bioinformatics and how the power of computers have helped with the study of biology.  After the mandatory introductions my prof started talking about the Human Genome Project and how computers played a major role in that.  The question came up:  Would you want your genome sequenced?

Etsy Adventures...

I have decided that I wanted to try to post something about once a week from now on.  It has been a while since I have blogged and well....it's time to get back at it.  This weeks (and a few more in the future) topic is about my Etsy Store.  Yes I have decided to start an Etsy Store in the hopes of selling my Pottery.

Yesterday started off bright and early at 7am.  It was bound to be a busy day as all of the male figure skaters were coming in for their last practice before their short program that night. 

Olympic Volunteer Day 4

Day 4 started at 7am on this grey and dreary day, but things looked up as the female skaters took to the ice.  No, Yuna Kim didn’t come nor did the Japanese, BUT Canada’s own Joannie Rochette came to practice.  She was pretty fantastic, landing most of her jumps and skating amazingly.

Anyways....with just 9 hours or so left to go before the Opening Ceremonies.....I just want to say that I can't wait for Olympics to start and...GO CANADA GO!!!

Olympic Volunteer Day 3

A pretty quiet day compared to my other 2 days.  Walked into a media frenzy for the 2 Japan male skaters, but that died down pretty quickly.  I actually had time to do a little bit of hw.  A bit of media action for the male Korean skater, but other than that it was a fun night of watching skaters do their thing.

There has been a lot of hoopla in terms of who will be the person who will bring the torch into BC place and light up the final cauldron.  I think it'll be a big local "hero," so Micheal J. Fox or Trevor Linden?

Olympic Volunteer Day 2

Day 2 started out pretty busy for me.  I went in early at around 3pm (my shift actually started at 3:45pm) and was put immediately to work.   The 3 China pairs had just finished skating so the venue was crawling with Chinese media people.  I’m sort of sad that I missed watching them skate but I’m sure I’ll get another opportunity too.  The next group had the famous pair from Germany, the World Champions.  I think their names are Alona and Robin (last names are purposely omitted as they are long, complicated and foreign).  I think something was wrong as they didn’t stay on the ice for too long, but from what I was able to see they were pretty good.  The other pairs on the ice clearly have to improve a great deal to compete with them.  After the pairs left, it got pretty quiet for a while.  The men were able to practice for the rest of the night.  There was a guy from Kazakhstan and his jumps were pretty impressive, although I had more fun saying “Kazakhstan” all night.  The next group of men skaters were from Romania (the same guy as from my last post) and a guy from Germany (Stefan something).  Stefan was a pretty solid skater and landed some impressive jumps and combinations.  BREZINA was back again for another practice run and I was rink side all through his practice (I was pretty much rink side for most of the men’s practices).  He managed to land 3 perfect quadruple toe jumps.  It was pretty fantastic to be able to watch him do that about 8 feet away from me.  My shift ended early due to the lack of athletes, but I think that will change during my next shift where pre-practices are done and real practices start.  I can’t wait! 

Sorry for the short post, but homework awaits.  

A side note....

I know many will ask, so I will answer it right now.  No I can't take pictures of skaters for you.  As one of the press ppl my job is to make sure that only people who have bought rights get to take pictures or film.  If a volunteer is caught taking pictures of athletes, they will get kicked out and their accreditation will be taken away. As much as I would like to sneak pictures, I won't because this experience is important and too cool for me to mess up.

My Olympic Journey Part 2

The first day of my Olympic volunteering came and went.  It started at 10am which is the latest of all of my morning shifts (I believe my earliest one is at 6:30am..yeah…FML…but I guess I asked for it?).  I got to Trout Lake and breezed through security.  I had a small side bag and they didn’t even ask me to put it through the scanner, which makes me think that they don’t seem all that concerned about threats against Trout Lake?  Or maybe I just looked that trust worthy.

”…and the 2010 Olympics will go to VANCOUVER, CANADA!!!”  *cheers…*  Well, perhaps the announcement didn’t quite go like that, but it would have been similar.  If asked to recall what the atmosphere was like in the city during the time that Vancouver was up for bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, I would have replied with an honest “We were up for bid for what?”
